PEAT REDUCED SUBSTRATES
Commercial Crop
Seventeen years of continuous research, by Neil Bragg and his research partners, has resulted in the development of a range of substrate recipes that are based on the reduction of sphagnum peat within the mix. A range of alternative products, carefully selected to enhance consistent, quality performance, have been incorporated to ensure that government peat reduction aspirations are met and a high specification peat reduced growing medium is available to selective buyers.

As the government and several environmental groups continue to increase pressure to reduce peat usage in horticulture, Bulrush have pioneered a range of substrates where between 10% and 50% of the mix has been replaced with non-peat products.

Growers can decide on the level of replacement they require. The unique replacement material is a well composted wood by-product (not bark) that is extremely consistent. These enhanced products help to meet the requirements of today’s professional plant buyers who are stipulating that growers use less peat in their substrates.

Our unique, new range of peat reduced substrates have been developed and produced for crops ranging from Bedding Plants (Spring & Summer), Pot Plants and a wide range of Ornamental Nursery Stock. At current levels of inclusion there are relatively few changes to be made in crop management techniques. To date, no problems with pest and disease management have been identified with these mixes.

CROP SPECIFIC SUBSTRATES
Allensmore Nursery

Bulrush Horticulture has gained a fine reputation for providing an extensive range of quality, customised substrate mixes. Each blend is carefully formulated to match the needs of specific crops and growing situations.

Bulrush has developed a unique, flexible, quality production system that allows a wide range of crop and specific customer mixes to be produced.

High grade fertilisers, physical additives, pesticides etc. can be added according to your requirements.

Each new recipe is sent to the grower for confirmation and approval before production commences.

Dnaish Substrate

DANISH POT PLANT SUBSTRATE

Our Danish Pot Plant Substrate has been developed using an open structured peat with added clay granules. It is ideal for planting up 9cm to 13cm pot plants and is very useful for salt sensitive species. Low nitrogen versions of both the above mixes are available to suit production of pansies, primroses and any other crop requiring control of vegetative growth to produce the required plant habit.

Container Substrate

CONTAINER SUBSTRATE

Container Substrate is suitable for outdoor or protected hardy nursery stock and herbaceous perennials. The base feed levels will establish the crop with controlled release fertilisers being added to provide long term nutrition.

-
Peat Free Substrate

PEAT FREE SUBSTRATES

Our peat free substrates have been developed to complete the range of substrates available. Neil Bragg and his team have developed these formulations in partnership with leading external bodies and commercial nurseries. The traceability and consistency of the raw materials used, form the basis of the performance of the final product. NB. Peat Free substrates are not available in mega bales.

-
Modular Substrate

MODULAR TRANSPLANT SUBSTRATE

Specifically formulated and produced for vegetable transplants. This substrate contains a blend of screened peats for easy filling of modules. Nitrogen and nutrient levels are adjusted to suit particular crop programs.

-
Seeding Substrate

SEEDING SUBSTRATE

Our unique screening system gives a high quality consistent, seeding mix that is ideal for trays and module plugs. A blend of fine peats and vermiculite allow for easy filling and buffered nutrition for seedlings. Fertiliser levels can be adjusted to suit specific growing requirements.
NB. Seeding Substrate is not available in bulk.

-
Propagation Substrate

PROPAGATION SUBSTRATE

A unique substrate for rooting cuttings. This substrate has been developed using an open grade of peat and low base feed levels that encourages rapid rooting. Mini controlled release fertiliser granules can be added for longer feed programs. NB. Propagation Substrate is not available in mega bales or bulk.

Bedding Substrate

BEDDING SUBSTRATE

Excellent for packs and small pots. Our bedding mix is free flowing and ideal for use with tray filling and transplanting equipment. A medium feed level has been incorporated to establish a beautiful even growth. Liquid feeding techniques are the favoured method to sustain longer cropping programs. However the addition of controlled release fertilisers are also available.

Pot Plant Substrate

POT PLANT SUBSTRATE

Developed for 9cm to 13cm pot plant production. The open structure of this substrate is particularly well suited to both flood bench and overhead irrigation methods. Accurate feed levels encourage even rooting and strong top growth.

Danish Substrate

DANISH BEDDING SUBSTRATE

The substrate is so called because Danish growers favour the addition of clays to increase the buffering or feed holding capacity of the substrate. The extra buffering helps produce a wide range of specialist crops. Specific mixes for salt sensitive plants have also been developed from this range.
